Congratulations to the 43rd graduating class of the Mansfield Act 120 Police Academy! Since its founding in 1977, this program has been a proud part of our community, shaping generations of law enforcement professionals. As part of Commonwealth University, the Police Academy serves as a regional training center that provides initial and continuing education for criminal justice practitioners, first responders, public safety professionals and the public.
These cadets have completed 919 hours of rigorous training, earning their place among Pennsylvania’s municipal police officers, and it was an honor recognizing them at their recent graduation. Best of luck to all the graduates as they step into their careers in public safety. Thank you for your commitment to serving and protecting our communities.

Safety First – Safety Always
It was a fun morning stopping by Troy Intermediate School to congratulate Rosalyn Killian for being selected as a winner in the Pennsylvania School Bus Safety Contest! Mrs. Lawrence, art teacher at W.R. Croman Primary School , encouraged her students to take part, and Rosalyn’s artwork went on to place third in the State for Division 1 of the School Bus Safety Poster Contest through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. I love seeing students in our area use their talent and creativity to get involved and help spread the message about safety first.

Honoring a Master Glass Artist
What a treat to visit Edward Hammond of E.M. Hammond Designs in Troy last week and celebrate 50 years of hand blowing and sculpting glass. Ed began in 1975 and was taught by “Wilbur Scientific” but has been teaching himself throughout the years and has developed a remarkable mastery of the craft. It was fascinating watching Ed work. Ed works with both hard and soft glass and uses different flame techniques, including freehand, spun, blown and solid glass methods. It is always so inspiring to see such craftmanship from our area. Ed’s one-of-a-kind pieces are treasured around the world and can be special ordered. Ed also loves to share his knowledge and enjoys teaching students how to create and expand their imagination in glass art. It is a golden opportunity to celebrate a true master craftsman and five decades of creativity and artistry. Here’s to many more years of inspiration! Click here to learn more about Ed’s work.

Beware ‘Veteran Savings Program’ Scam
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is alerting veterans to scam now circulating that involves a direct-mail postcard claiming to offer eligible veterans an additional $160 per month through something called the “PA Veteran Savings Program 2025.”
The postcard appears official at first glance, using formal language and referencing programs such as CHAMPVA and TRICARE for Life. It urges recipients to call within five days to “help manage call volume,” a tactic often used to pressure veterans into responding quickly. However, the postcard contains several red flags. It does not include a return address, and it lists a bogus phone number (855-600-2411) designed to lure callers into sharing personal information.
If you or someone you know receives suspicious mail, emails or phone calls promising new benefits, financial increases or requests for personal information, it’s important not to respond directly. Instead, seek verification from trusted sources.
Pennsylvania veterans and family members who are uncertain about any solicitation are encouraged to contact the DMVA at 800-547-2838.
