Game Commission Night

It is definitely starting to feel like fall, and we are planning an exciting Game Commission Night coming up in just a few short weeks. The PA Game Commission is bringing its virtual hunting trailer, Laser Shot, to allow junior hunters to sharpen their shooting skills from 5-6 p.m.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for the main presentation. You’ll hear from Pennsylvania Game Commission Furbearer Biologist Thomas Keller, who will be sharing information about Eastern Coyotes in northern Pennsylvania. Eastern coyotes are well-known predators in Pennsylvania, and they’re known to prey on fawns and small game. Austin Dunham, a local hunter, will also be sharing helpful tips on hunting predators in the Northern Tier.

Registration is required and may be made online at RepOwlett.com or call the Wellsboro office at 570-724-1390 or the Troy office at 570-297-3045. Spots are filling up fast, so register soon.

Leading in Legislation: Requiring Voter ID

It is just common sense. We provide identification for many transactions in daily life. As such, it just makes sense that voters present an ID at the polling place. That’s why I am prime sponsor to House Bill 759. Requiring voters to show ID before casting a ballet is broadly supported to improve election integrity. My bill would ensure identification requirements are easily met by providing a durable voter registration card to all eligible voters to ensure Pennsylvania’s elections are both secure and accessible to all qualified voters.

Continuing Education to Stay Ahead of the Latest Scams

One month ago, we organized a Senior Scam Seminar at the Tioga County Fairgrounds, a highly educational and informative event to raise awareness about scams occurring in our region. It is crucial we keep this conversation going with our friends and neighbors and remind them to always be vigilant. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a rising number of adults are falling victim to impersonation scams and losing their life savings. The FTC offers tips on how to spot the tactics scammers use and how to avoid them. At our scam awareness seminar, we talked about many ways to protect ourselves. Here are some tips recommended by the FTC to help avoid scams:

  •   Don’t move money to “protect it.” Never transfer or send money to anyone, no matter who they say they are, in response to an unexpected call or message.
  •   Hang up and verify. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from a government agency or business, contact the company or agency using a phone number or website you know is real. Don’t trust the phone number or name they provide.
  •   Block unwanted calls. Learn about call blocking options to stop many of these scammers before they reach you.

Sadly, as many scammers are impersonating government agencies, it is important to know that the FTC and other government agencies will never demand money, make threats, tell you to transfer money or promise you a prize. As we talked about at the Senior Scam Seminar – stop, take a step back and think it through. If something does not feel right, talk to a trusted family member or friend. As always, my office is available to help.

A Celebration of PA Barns

The Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office invites you to contribute to the effort of documenting and celebrating the barns of Pennsylvania that define our state’s rural traditions.

Barns represent the agricultural heritage, craftsmanship and local pride found throughout the Commonwealth. Whether your barn is a centuries-old bank barn, a family-built dairy barn, or a recently restored structure, the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office wants to preserve its story. You can go here to find out how to submit your photos and background information and have your barn added to the Pennsylvania Inventory of Historic Places.
