May You Feel the Spirit of Christmas

Christmas is nearly here, and I hope you are feeling the hope, joy and peace it brings. The season can be a challenging one for many people and for many reasons, but I truly hope you are able to slow down and enjoy time with your loved ones as we celebrate the coming of our savior, Christ the Lord.

While we celebrate the Greatest Gift and exchange gifts with our loved ones, this is also a season for helping others. I hope you will take a moment to read the next two articles about some ways you can help fulfill needs here in our community.

From my family to yours, I wish you a very Merry Christmas.

Seeing a Need, Fulfilling a Need

Heather McNett, a Canton native, saw a need for a safe place for local families to facilitate custody exchanges and a safe place for parents to visit their children in a supervised setting. In 2017, Heather started her organization as Safe Transitions, which was eventually renamed Supporting Area Families Everyday (SAFE).

SAFE is a nonprofit organization offering support in Towanda and New Milford, and expanding into Tioga County. SAFE provides supervised visitation and custody exchanges in a neutral, kid-friendly environment. SAFE also provides parenting classes to help parents develop skills to provide loving, stable homes for their families.

I recently visited the Towanda location to see firsthand the impact Heather and her team are having in the community. Currently, SAFE serves approximately 20 families, including 40 children. I heard stories of children who reported feeling safe, supported and cared for, and parents who are receiving the resources necessary to improve their and their children’s future. SAFE’s mission is to provide universal access to all families. However, a waiting list currently exists, as additional funding is needed to maintain staffing levels and ensure continued support for local families.

Through the contributions of the community, individuals, fundraising, grants, and the United Way fund, as well as the support of dedicated staff, SAFE can provide a safe and supportive environment for children and families in our community.

If you would like more information on how SAFE can support you and your family, or if you would like to partner with them in building a brighter future for our community, please visit www.safenepa.org.

Organ Donation Saves Lives

Pennsylvania strongly supports organ and tissue donation because of its lifesaving and life-enhancing opportunities. It saves tens of thousands of lives each year.

When just one person signs up to be an organ and tissue donor, he or she can potentially save up to eight lives through organ donation and enhance the lives of 75 others through tissue donation. Thousands die every year waiting for a donated organ and each person who signs up can make an impact to reduce that number.

PennDOT has partnered with the Department of Health, in cooperation with the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) and The Gift of Life Donor Program, to promote organ and tissue donation awareness. If you would like to register as an organ donor, it’s simple to do so:
When you visit any of PennDOT's Photo License Centers to get your photo taken for a driver's license or identification (ID) card, you may choose to have the "Organ Donor" designation printed on your product.

You can also register online to become an organ donor at any time, including when you renew or request a replacement product.
