Celebrating a 90th Birthday…and a Century Farm!

Harold Brown is a sterling example of dedication to a community! Not only did we celebrate his 90th birthday earlier this month, but the family also received their official Century Farm Certificate from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, marking 100 years of operation at Cozy Lane Farms in Liberty.

The farm was started by Harold’s parents, Leon and Alta, in 1922. He and his three sisters were born on the farm, and he never left. He was joined there by his wife, Marjorie, in the mid-1950s. The farm was in dairy production until 1992, and Harold Brown continued to raise heifers and make hay for many years after. The family now rents out the land to another farming family in the area.

Farming is a time-consuming, labor-intensive profession, but Harold didn’t let that stop him from being very involved in the community his entire life. Thank you, Harold, for your commitment to agriculture and the community we call home.

Happy birthday, and congratulations!

Grant to Support New Roof at Wellsboro High School

Great news for Wellsboro Area School District, as they’ve been awarded an Environmental Repairs Grant from the state Department of Education.

The $629,343 grant will be used to replace a leaking roof on the high school building. I applaud the district for seeking and obtaining this much-needed funding to ensure its facilities remain in the best shape possible as they focus on educating our kids.

Wellsboro was one of 109 school districts, career and technical education centers, and charter schools to receive funding through the program, which is aimed at ensuring every student has a safe and healthy school in which to learn.

PSP, Commonwealth University to Offer College Credits for Academy Training

The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and Commonwealth University, which includes Mansfield University, recently announced an agreement that allows PSP troopers to receive college credits for their successful completion of cadet basic training at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy.

Upon successful completion of their PSP training, Commonwealth University will grant academic credit toward an Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice.

This is a great incentive to encourage more people to pursue a career in law enforcement and criminal justice. This year’s state budget includes funding for four cadet classes. Those interested in learning more about becoming a state trooper, should visit www.patrooper.com.

Protecting Consumers from Auto Renewals

We’ve all dealt with the frustrations of automatic renewals for services we may or may not still want. The state House unanimously approved legislation this week that aims to help consumers avoid those frustrations by requiring companies to be more transparent about the terms of such contracts.

House Bill 116 would amend the Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law by requiring businesses that offer automatic renewals to:

• Provide renewal terms, cancellation policy and how to cancel.
• Allow a customer who signs up online to cancel online.
• Require any material changes in the automatic renewal be provided in a clear and conspicuous manner.

For subscriptions including a free trial period, businesses would also be required to disclose the price that would be charged after the trial period ends and the deadline to cancel to avoid charges, as well as give customers the ability to cancel before being charged.

The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Stay Safe this Halloween

Halloween is a fun time for many kids and families, but safety must always remain a top priority. According to the National Safety Council, the following are some tips to keep in mind while trick-or-treating:

• All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant.
• If children are out after dark, fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks.
• Opt for non-toxic Halloween makeup over masks, which can obscure vision.
• A responsible adult should accompany young children on neighborhood rounds.
• If older children are going alone, plan and review a route and establish a return time.
• Teach children never to enter a stranger’s home or car.
• Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stay with friends.
• Tell children not to eat any treats until they return home, where they can be inspected by an adult.

Motorists traveling on neighborhood trick-or-treat nights should remember to stay alert, slow down, and enter and exit all driveways and alleys carefully.
