Owlett Announces State Funding for School Safety Enhancements at Area School Districts

October 31, 2018

HARRISBURG – Rep. Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford/Potter) today announced that every school district with the 68th Legislative District will receive a $25,000 grant to help with school security improvements. The funding was awarded under the School Safety and Security Grant Program.

“Ensuring student safety is paramount,” said Owlett. “This funding, which I supported, will help schools make enhancements to their security plans to better protect students. I was pleased to learn that every school district in 68th District applied for and will receive a $25,000 grant.”

School districts in the 68th Legislative District that received funding include Athens Area, Canton Area, Galeton Area, Northern Tioga, Southern Tioga, Troy Area and Wellsboro Area.

The School Safety and Security Grant Program is designed so that schools have maximum flexibility to use the funding to meet their own specific needs. Those needs could include hiring school police officers, school resource officers, counselors and/or mental health counselors; alternative education and diversion programs; violence prevention initiatives; school safety and emergency preparedness plans; or physical upgrades to school buildings and equipment to improve safety.

The new grant program was created as part of a comprehensive school safety bill that was signed into law in June. More than $60 million in new funding was dedicated in the current year’s budget to improve school safety.

Additional funding, which can be used by school districts, intermediate units, area vocational-technical schools, charter schools and private residential rehabilitative institutions that are looking for additional support, will be awarded at a later time.
